The Magic of Mentoring - A Snow Stars Reflection

Hi, everyone!

I have been interning with Stride for the past month and as my time comes to an end, I want to take a brief moment to reflect on my experience and how this has impacted my values of building and maintaining support systems.

From the delayed start of my first week, I could see there was a lot of moving pieces that Leslie needed help with, especially with the unpredictability of COVID conditions and social distancing restrictions. Despite these obstacles, we decided to introduce a social media program that addressed how our Stride girls can maintain a connection with their peers, mentors, and Stride community.

I had the pleasure of learning how to Ski during my time with Stride, a unique opportunity that I do not think I would have experienced any other way. I had a lot of fun trying something new! I understand what it is like to come from a background where your dreams may seem a bit compromised at first, and I also understand how empowering it feels to engage with a dream, passion, or hobby at your fullest potential. Stride focuses on building positive, supportive, and healthy relationships for female athletes through healthy role models, and access to resources and opportunities.

Due to tight COVID conditions, I was restricted to remote communication with the Sisters in Sport program. In the two instances that I accompanied the Snow Stars group on their Tuesday mentoring sessions to gather media content, I found myself delighted by how much spending time outdoors energized the rest of my day. I was even more enthralled with how sports creates a space that builds confidence. The girls knew they could rely on one another if they needed help, or could rest assured a mentor would be ready to assist them. Outside of just practice, the girls are given role models to inspire a positive relationship with themselves and in their social relationships around them.

Throughout my time here, I am proud to say that Stride’s commitment to mentorship is what resonated with me from beginning to end. From overcoming slippery slopes to lending an attentive ear, Stride’s mentorship reaches beyond just the extra practice and building of practical skill, the girls learn about healthy relationships and building confidence. This experience was fulfilling in the sense of working directly with the community around me and meeting the faces outside of my college bubble here in Vermont. I sincerely appreciate this immersive experience, and I consider it valuable. Thank you for working with me this Winter Term!

Sincerely,

Gianna Ferguson

P.S. I think ski might really be a thing for me now.
